Chapter 14

Dallas

I gather Scarlett in my arms and carry her back to the Hummer. She’s exhausted, she’s been through too much, and now everyone knows a secret she’s been trying to hide for almost half her life. The question of who impregnated her burns in my mind. Who did it? Who’s blackmailing her now? What else do they have on her?

I see Ryder and Cole on the porch of the bar with a bottle of beer in hand and I can’t stop myself from glaring at Ryder as I pass him. Everyone in town thinks he’s never touched her, that he’s refused to, but if not him that night there’s only one other option. Richard Ashcroft. Except he’s already fucking dead and I won’t be getting any revenge if it’s him.

Gently, I set Scarlett in the passenger seat and reach over her to buckle her in. As I pull away from the car she grabs me, her hands curling around my shoulders as she trembles. I still, looking into her eyes as if she holds all the secrets to the universe and I’m her obedient acolyte.

“If you want to let me go because of this, I understand. I won't blame you, you can just drop me off at home and I’ll—”

I slip my hand under her chin, placing my thumb gently on her lips to silence her. Her grip on my neck tells me she wouldn’t understand, that she desperately needs me to be alright with this. Her eyes seem to scream ‘don’t throw me aside’ and my heart crumbles.

“There is nothing in this world that you could do to make me walk away now, Scarlett,” I tell her simply. I tilt her head up slightly and brush my lips against hers, holding our faces close for a few breaths.

She nods, it’s probably all she can do. I see the tears spilling from her eyes. I close the passenger door carefully and walk around the back of my car. My fists flex and relax, aching to hurt someone. Aching to erase all her pain and sorrow.

“Dallas?” Cole calls, and I shake my head at him. With one final glare at Ryder, I throw the driver’s door open and jump in. He should have done something, he should have protected her. He was all she had back then and she was in love with him!

The engine roars to life and I rev up a few times as I hold eye contact with the Dark Moon Alpha. He knows what happened that night, I know he knows. Ryder’s brows knit with a frown and he pulls his phone out when it chimes. He looks at it briefly, then looks back with stark horror on his face.

He tosses the phone to Cole and jumps over the banister, coming right for us. I have a split second to see the shock on Cole’s face when he sees the picture before I spin out of the parking lot, leaving black tire marks on the concrete in my wake.
